Technology, objects and waste: Repairing eco-social damages for a more-than-human communality

Blanca Callén
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

In this seminar, Blanca Callén, lecturer professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and researcher in the field of Social Studies of Science and Technology (STS) at the Carenet Group (UOC), will review some of her main research and community projects. Dedicated to the analysis of the material culture derived from the digitalisation of life and the socio-material relationships that we establish with everyday objects and technology, these projects seek to comprehend some caring responses and collective strategies to face the current climate crisis: the recovery, hacking or dismantling of devices and infrastructures turned into electronic waste; the maintenance and repair of objects and appliances through learning communities; the questioning of the limits between what is considered as living or inert; the exploration and catalogue of daily strategies for living from sufficiency; or an hypothetical declaration of ‘The Rights of Things’ are just some examples of the transdisciplinary research projects that will be presented. From eco-feminist and post-human perspectives, her research and intervention experiences invite us to view how socio-material research methods can simultaneously work as tools for more sensitive knowledge production but also as reparative ethical actions that help us living together, humans and non-humans, in a damaged planet.
