The Citizens' Climate Committee met this Tuesday in a new session focused on seeking local solutions to climate change. The initiative forms part of the ODS Platform project, funded by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda, and developed by the Post-Growth Innovation Lab at the University of Vigo. The project aims to assess the development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a local level in Spanish municipalities, implementing various initiatives, including the involvement of citizens in municipal decision-making to achieve the SDGs.
The Citizens' Climate Committee is a working group established in the city of Pontevedra, composed of residents from diverse backgrounds, which is using participatory methods to develop a set of recommendations for actions that Pontevedra City Council can implement to reduce the city's ecological footprint. The proposals will focus on the production, consumption and distribution of food, addressing issues such as the choice of local products, waste reduction and the environmental impact of diet. The Committee will meet for a total of five sessions between March and June. In this second session, an assessment of food production in Pontevedra was carried out, considering where, how and when it is produced. Based on this assessment, participants developed an initial set of possible actions that could be implemented in the city to promote a more sustainable food production system.
The next session of the working group will take place on 28 April and will be a day on which the Committee will work collaboratively with students and teachers from IES Luis Seoane, who, over the past few months, have been developing a research project to study dietary consumption patterns in Pontevedra. This third session will also feature guest speakers from educational institutions in various parts of Spain, Europe and Latin America.
